Who Do You Want to Become?

Do you always get the question, what do you want to become when you grow up? What do you want to do with your life? What is the next step?

Some people do not know and it is okay. We try to figure out what we want to become every day. What we want to become and how do we get to where we want.

When I was little, I have not thought much of what I want to become and how I want to live my life. But I do remember being asked by aunties and uncles and even distant relatives what do I want to do? This was always a hard question to find an answer for.

Often it is hard to describe to people in my family what I am studying and what I want to become. My major in college was East Asian Studies. And a lot of people ask me what I am going to do with my degree. In fact, I was asked by a student, why study East Asian Studies when I am Asian myself.

But, this all sparked when I was little, all thanks to the movies. Watching Chinese movies especially the ones with Jackie Chan in it, and wanting to watch a film and not have to wait for it to be Hmong dubbed. I wanted to learn Chinese so I can watch movies and not have to worry about subtitles. This ultimately led me to study Chinese and choosing my major.

Of course, moving abroad was a life-changing experience and I wanted to get to know more about how people in similar culture interact with one another and appreciate how we are so similar and yet so different. East Asian studies allow me to be more knowledgeable and aware of my community and other countries.

Could your childhood have made some sort of influence in you deciding what you wanted to do in the near future? What was it that sparked your interest in finding who you want to become?
